After Care

THERE WILL BE CRACKS.

These are not kiln dried pieces.  The nature of the drying process will result in cracks(checks).

There are steps we can take to minimize this cracking.

Most pieces will have a relief cut in the back to help concentrate the cracks on the backside.

Spacers,  you should have your carving set on some kind of spacer so that air can flow underneath(1/2" - 1").  The underside is the only unsealed part of the carving where moisture can exit.

Placement, protected from the weather and direct sunlight is ideal, but not always possible.

Sealant,  I use Minwax Helmsman oil based Spar Urethane..  2 to 3 coats the first year, then 1 coat every year after.

Repair.  If a crack is big and in an undesirable spot I can fix it.  If you  bring the carving to my shop, the crack can be fixed with some shims, sawdust, wood glue, and some fresh paint.  First time is free.
